The Royal Canadian Mint Commemorates Historic Changemakers With New Coins
By Alexa Heah, 06 Nov 2023
From the beginning of the year, The Royal Canadian Mint has been captivating the public with its engaging History of Making Change campaign.
This campaign aims to promote the country’s diverse and fascinating history through the introduction of three new additions to its Commemorative Circulation Program (CCP).
With the help of animated videos, The Royal Canadian Mint is taking viewers on a journey through Canadian archives—highlighting the significance of the $2 National Indigenous Peoples Day coin, the $1 Elsie MacGill coin, and the $2 Jean-Paul Riopelle coin.
Each coin represents a unique aspect of the nation’s storied heritage, celebrating its rich tapestry of culture and accomplishments by focusing on a central theme of “uniqueness.”
Working together with McCann Montreal, the animations serve as portals to transport viewers back into the past to experience the vibrant stories that showcase these iconic moments and figures.
Each video has its own distinct animation style tailored to honor the subject and story of the respective coin.
For example, the video dedicated to the $2 National Indigenous Peoples Day coin sheds light on the diverse groups that form Indigenous culture within Canada, while the Elsie MacGill coin clip focuses on the remarkable achievements of the trailblazer, who shattered gender barriers in aeronautical engineering.
The latest installment spotlights Jean-Paul Riopelle on what would’ve been his 100th birthday, paying homage to his artistic approach, which challenged traditional conventions and propelled him to become a recognized figure in the art world.
AJ Colbourne, director of e-commerce and marketing communications at The Royal Canadian Mint, told LBB Online that diversity was “one of the true strengths” of the country, and the organization was proud to celebrate the country’s history “while highlighting the intricate details” of its coins.
