Samsung’s dedication to game-changing displays is clear as day, recently unveiling the world’s first transparent microLED screen just before CES 2024 in Las Vegas. This innovation is set to blur the boundaries between digital content and reality, according to the South Korean tech giant.
The company has showcased three versions of these transparent microLED displays, each with a different design. Two models featured tinted glass to help viewers focus on the screen instead of what’s behind it, while the third was as clear as regular glass and boasted a sleek, frameless design.
The culmination of six years of research and development, this see-through invention brings forth a crystal-clear, glass-like appearance that invites to viewers consume visual content differently. These displays offer high pixel density for incredibly sharp images and are less susceptible to ambient light interference, a notable advantage over transparent OLED panels.
As for cost, there’s no word yet on what these screens will go for, but as Engadget points out, given that Samsung’s current microLED TVs are priced around US$150,000 for a 110-inch model, these new transparent screens might not come cheap.
Regardless, the demonstration shows what’s possible for the future of screens and opens up exciting possibilities for how we’ll interact with digital content going forward.
