Case Maker For iPhone That Survived 16,000Ft Alaska Airlines Plunge Comes Forth

If cats have nine lives, this Apple iPhone has multifold. The smartphone miraculously withstood a 16,000-foot drop from an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX aircraft when a door plug broke off mid-flight on January 5, forcing an emergency landing.
Despite its high-altitude plunge, the device—found on the side of a road—was still functional, in airplane mode, with half its battery life intact, and still displaying a baggage claim tag for Alaska Airlines ASA1282 on its screen. Naturally, the tale of survival took social media by storm.
Worth noting is that the iPhone was protected by a case. Now, the brand that designed it has responded to the incident.
As revealed by Spigen, it was its Cryo Armor cover that helped cushion the fall. The company took to X (formerly Twitter) to share photos of the phone sent in by a friend of Cuong Tran, the device’s owner. These images confirmed that the iPhone was protected by the hardy case designed for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Priced at around US$65, the Cryo Armor case is intended to support gameplay, rather than the rare flight risk. It’s crafted from TPU, PC, graphite, and silicone sheets to aid in heat reduction during intense gaming sessions. Additionally, its ‘AirCube’ pattern is designed to stimulate airflow.

Importantly, the accessory’s certified military-grade drop protection, brought forth by an ‘Air Cushion’ technology, proved to be the lifesaver in this high-flying incident.
In a playful response to the incident, Spigen reached out to the Alaska Airlines account, suggesting a collaboration. Unsurprisingly, it hasn’t gotten a yes.
