IKEA US is redecorating the rulebook on home design with its first-ever Style Guide. Differing from its iconic, now-decommissioned catalogs, this version is a deep dive into four distinct interior concepts that are shaping modern homes.
The report identifies four key design movements: ‘warm minimalism’, ‘Swedish roots’, ‘modern playfulness’, and ‘Scandinavian folklore’. Each look offers a unique perspective, complete with color palettes and data, encouraging homeowners to create spaces that reflect their personal stories and lifestyles.
It’s called a style guide for a reason. The furniture giant abstains from using the term “trends,” as your comfort zone should be timelessly resonant.
“Seasons change—design trends do, too,” describes Seana Strawn, country home furnishing and retail design manager at IKEA US. “But unlike seasonal shifts, the endless pursuit of the latest design trends can distract us from filling our homes with pieces we love and that love us back.”
Homes should instead be true reflections of the people in them, filled with items that bring joy and ease. “As we step into 2024, let’s stop chasing trends,” Strawn adds. “Instead, let’s create happier homes based on real-life experiences. We want to help you create a home based on your celebrations, your real routines, your authentic needs, your shared grievances, and everything in between.”
Warm minimalism: sleek; playful; colorful; elegant

The ‘warm minimalism’ style is perfect for those looking to start the new year with a clean slate, marrying simplicity and functionality with a touch of playfulness and bold statements. This theme is characterized by clean lines, geometric patterns, and natural materials, creating clutter-free spaces that are both minimalist and inviting.

Swedish roots: simple; versatile; natural; harmonious

‘Swedish roots’ is deeply immersed in Scandinavian design principles, fixating on family life, simple solutions, and comfort to refresh and recharge living spaces. This style comprises natural tones, blonde woods, and primary colors, creating casual, welcoming spaces that gently blend indoor and outdoor living.

Modern playfulness: joyful; expressive; colorful; contemporary

For those who love a bit of flair, ‘modern playfulness’ is the way to go. This maximalist style is an eclectic mix of bright colors, pastels, and bold patterns, a palette for experimentation. It’s about finding a balance between relaxation, activity, and organization, making it ideal for the urban, playful homeowner.

Scandinavian folklore: cozy; natural; earthy; rustic

‘Scandinavian folklore’ brings a cozy, rustic charm, inspired by rural Swedish life at the turn of the 20th century. It’s perfect for those who love hosting, valuing natural materials, simple furniture, and warm, earthy tones that create a welcoming space for friends and family.

The guide also addresses common challenges in home revitalization. For instance, nearly half (45%) of people find organization overwhelming, so they could benefit from tapping into the ‘warm minimalism’ ethos and reach into IKEA’s storage-friendly furniture. Additionally, 20% of respondents feel more content when connected with nature, accentuating the importance of creating a harmonious indoor-outdoor space. And with 51% saying home is their favorite place to be, the guide suggests cozying up spaces with the earthy tones of the ‘Scandinavian folklore’ style.
“The 2024 IKEA Style Guide is intended to show how design and everyday living are intertwined and how, together, they can create a beautiful, more comfortable life,” Strawn concludes. “Whether you fall head over heels in love with one style, or decide to experiment and mix them up… what matters is you choose what works best for your home and what fills your everyday life with comfort and joy.” You can read it here.
