Google’s DeepMind team is putting some creativity back into the hands of humans with ImageFX, a new artificial intelligence art generator that’s now available to use. Built on its robust Imagen 2 model, ImageFX empowers users to create masterpieces using text prompts and tweak them with guidance from the machine.
ImageFX sets itself apart from popular tools like Midjourney and DALL-E 3 with ‘expressive chips’, in which the app provides keyword suggestions to inspire users to explore new facets of their digital creations.
Designed with the artist in mind, ImageFX encourages more creative freedom, with expressive chips adding depth and dimension to the process. The tech giant says it is introducing this level of control after early explorations into generative AI tools reaffirmed users’ desire for experimentation.

Visuals shared in a blog post show that ImageFX can also spell words in images, something that generative AI has struggled with for some time. That’s possible with Imagen 2, which rolled out the ability to conjure up logos and text in December 2023.

In navigating the complex terrain of AI-generated content, Google has established several safeguards with ImageFX. These measures aim to curtail the creation of violent, offensive, or sexually explicit images.
Furthermore, the tool incorporates a prompt-level filter to avoid generating images of public figures, TechCrunch reports.
Another layer of integrity comes with SynthID, a digital watermark developed to ensure the authenticity of AI-generated images. This stamp remains hidden to the naked eye but can be identified in platforms like Google Search or Chrome, so as to help distinguish AI-generated images from organic ones.
ImageFX marks Google’s latest foray into the realm of generative AI, part of its AI Test Kitchen. This platform serves as a playground for experimental AI projects, including MusicFX for music creation and TextFX for text styling.

Currently, ImageFX is accessible to users in the US, Kenya, New Zealand, and Australia, via the company’s AI Test Kitchen.
