Burger King is taking on the wave of AI art generators with a sizzling twist. Not only will its version deliver some mouthwatering results, but the returns are huge—you could walk home with your dream burger and a million bucks.
The fast-food chain has launched the Million Dollar Whopper Contest, where, for the first time, it’s handing over the crown to loyal subjects and giving them the liberty of dreaming up Whopper topping combinations. To beef up the stakes, there’s a cool US$1 million on the line and the chance to see your culinary concoction served up at Burger Kings across the country.

Diners can stack up to eight toppings on their virtual Whopper. With the existing Whopper already boasting over 200,000 possible combinations, this experiment takes it further as you can incorporate ingredients that Burger King doesn’t currently use, just as long as you steer clear of shellfish and anything that doesn't belong on a plate.
Acting similarly with artificial intelligence tools like DALL-E and Midjourney, Burger King’s AI chef lets you enter text prompts—in this case, ingredient names—and watch your masterpiece come alive.

Orders are first stylized as typographic Whoppers, but once you’re satisfied with yours, you can enter it and the model will cook it into a realistic visualization.

To throw your hat in the US$1 million ring, you’ll need to be a Royal Perks member, with the contest running from February 6 to March 17, 2024. The heat intensifies as three finalists will be invited to Burger King’s Miami HQ, where they’ll fine-tune their burgers before a nationwide taste test.
Fast-food lovers will then vote on their favorite creation, with the top vote-getter snagging the lucrative prize.

“Burger King is all about Having It Your Way, and this contest is a true embodiment of that. More than 50% of Guests customize their Whopper sandwich, and now, the possibilities of what those customizations include are endless,” explains Pat O’Toole, chief marketing officer at Burger King. “And, whether or not your Whopper ends up in restaurants nationwide, we’re giving guests the opportunity to experience and share their creation using the power of AI technology.”
