Adobe’s show-stopping Primrose dress has not just walked the runway for the first time; it’s danced across it, thanks to a dazzling collaboration with fashion icon Christian Cowan.
First unveiled at Adobe MAX last year, Project Primrose amazed all with designs that transformed in real-time, pushing the boundaries of static pieces into dynamic expressions and experiences. With its laser-cut polymer dispersed liquid crystal “petals” that cycled through patterns within a split second, it allowed physical clothing to change before your eyes. Hidden beneath each petal, a flexible printed circuit board worked its magic, enabling the garment to shimmer between shades of silver and ivory.

Making its grand entrance at Cowan’s 2024 Fall/Winter show during New York City Fashion Week, the Primrose dress was adorned with the designer’s signature stars, and its petals animated with each movement, creating a living, breathing spectacle.
The creation began with Adobe Illustrator, which laid out the intricate designs and flexible circuit boards, while Adobe After Effects added the finishing touches, bringing the number to life with mesmerizing motion graphics.

Christian Cowan reflected on the project with awe, marveling at its high-tech artistry.
“The true technological craftsmanship that has gone into this piece is mind-boggling. And the simplicity you are left with is so seamless, you’d never know the layers upon layers of boning, satin, cable work, motherboards, transmitters, and polymers scales that are all at play,” the designer shares.

“The best part about the job I have is to be able to dream, and then make those dreams a reality, this was exactly that.”
