Artificial intelligence is stealing everyone’s jobs, they say. Well, Will Smith is snatching AI’s.
One of the fever dreams that spawned from the emergence of generative AI last year was a viral, wacky video by Reddit user chaindrop that imagined Smith scarfing down spaghetti. Being a professional actor, the A-lister is using his actions instead of words to finally make a response.
Cooking up his own version without the assistance of AI, Smith, in the flesh, dives into a bowl of pasta with gusto, slurping strands directly off the plate and using his hands as makeshift utensils. During one take, he even bites into a friend’s locs, which could be mistaken by a bot for spaghetti. “This is getting out of hand!” he captions his post.
The parody, set to the energetic beats of Lil Jon’s Snap Yo Fingers, captures the comedian’s movements in a choppy fashion, echoing the jittery, unnatural flow of generative videos.
This tongue-in-cheek spoof comes at a time when OpenAI has just lifted the curtain on Sora, its latest text-to-video tool. With labels like “AI Video 1 Year Ago” and “AI Video Now,” it also plays on a recent trend of people tracking the evolution of AI-generated clips.
Fans are welcoming this human-generated montage, with some jokingly questioning its authenticity.
“Never thought I’d see the live-action version,” notes one follower in the comments.
Another chimes in, “I’m still in doubt if [the] second video was also made by AI or not.”
Expressing its believability as an AI-created clip, one person imagines its initial prompt being, “Will Smith devours a fine dining spaghetti plate in record time, high detail, 4K Render, cinematic.”
