McDonald’s Japan has taken a leaf out of the internet’s vast meme playbook and reviving the Nyan Cat meme from 2011 with a fresh, anime twist.

This time, the catchy tune backs not a pixelated cat flying through space, but an anime-style schoolgirl with feline features, all to sing the praises of McDonald’s shaker (Shakashaka) fries.

The spot, animated by online artist Hamafugu, introduces viewers to ‘Shakagirl’, who sports cat ears and a tail. The character dances enthusiastically to a version of the Nyan Cat song cleverly modified to feature “shakashaka” in place of the original “nyannyan” sounds to highlight the unique shake-shake experience that comes with the seasoned fries.

With Shakashaka fries, patrons receive a packet of special seasoning to pour into the bag of spuds, which they then shake to coat each fry in a delicious, savory mix.

No stranger to embracing anime culture, McDonald’s most recently validated the existence of WcDonald’s, a fictional restaurant often seen in the manga and anime universe. The release includes ‘WcNugget’ meals and ‘Wcsauce’, along with themed packaging and all-new manga chapters created by Studio Pierrot and illustrator Acky Bright.

In the same vein, last September, the Golden Arches’ Japanese arm shared some cozy animations, illustrated by artist Urachan and set to lo-fi music, that depicted heartwarming scenes of families and friends enjoying meals together
