Sir David Attenborough, the iconic voice of natural history documentaries, has stepped aside for a special episode of Planet Earth III. 50 schoolchildren have come forward in his stead, narrating the episode using the presenter’s original scripts.
Celebrating Earth Day 2024, the April 22 episode, titled Planet Earth III: Narrated By Kids, features stunning visuals from the series accompanied by the enthusiastic voices of the young narrators. The children, aged between nine and 13, were chosen from schools recognized for their dedication to fundraising with BBC Children in Need, a UK charity.
“Welcome to a very special episode of Planet Earth III, narrated by schoolchildren from all over the UK,” the kids can be heard explaining. “Because you don’t have to be Sir David Attenborough to become a voice for nature.”
The network hopes this initiative will inspire a new generation of environmental stewards. Lizzie Daly, a wildlife biologist who hosted a virtual assembly for participating schools, is “thrilled” at the possibilities and sees this as a chance to empower young people. The episode serves a dual purpose: entertaining viewers with breathtaking wildlife encounters, while simultaneously igniting a passion for conservation in young minds.
