Issey Miyake, the Japanese fashion house renowned for its pleating techniques, has woven ties with athleticwear giant New Balance for the first time. Stepping forward is the Issey Miyake x New Balance MT10O, a minimalist trail running shoe inspired by barefoot mobility.
Unveiled at Issey Miyake’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway show in Paris, the MT10O takes its foundation from New Balance’s existing running shoe. The barebones design prioritizes a close-to-the-ground feel, echoing the growing desire for a more natural running experience, as well as the “sensuous physicality” that defines designer Satoshi Kondo’s work. It’s an extreme departure from the bulky, over-cushioned sneakers dominating recent years.
Embodying the collection’s theme of “natural and honest shape,” the special MT10O is built with minimal padding for a barefoot-like sensation, ideal for those seeking a more connected experience with the terrain.
The outsole, crafted by industry-leader Vibram, sports a thin layer of cushioning and a durable, patterned sole for optimal grip on uneven surfaces. The upper is a study in contrasts—aerodynamic mesh panels for breathability meet premium leather detailing for both breathability and durability.
Secure, rope-like laces reminiscent of hiking boots complete the outdoorsy aesthetic, and a snug interior ensure confident strides on even the most uneven paths.
The Issey Miyake x New Balance MT10O is a limited-edition release, available in three colorways—black, white, and blue-green—that complement Issey Miyake’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. The shoes launch first in Japan on May 15 at select retailers. For those outside of Japan, a global release follows on June 14.
