Hey Siri, are you friends with ChatGPT? Apple is reportedly planning a significant revamp of its pioneering voice-activated assistant, in hopes of keeping pace with competitors in the increasingly crowded virtual assistant space.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Cupertino tech giant is nearing completion on a potential deal with OpenAI which could see the popular ChatGPT language model integrated into upcoming iPhones with the release of iOS 18.
However, a similarly timed New York Times report suggests that even without a finalized OpenAI partnership, Apple is determined to improve Siri. The company had been meaning to train the assistant’s brains since last year, but its keenness was supposedly deepened after senior executives tested ChatGPT. Not to be left out of the AI race, the Siri team is said to have been allocated more resources, with Apple making efforts to recruit and retain leading AI researchers. The focus is on generative AI, with the aim of making Siri more conversational and capable, fostering a more natural user experience.
An Apple-OpenAI alliance presents several intriguing possibilities. ChatGPT’s ability to generate human-quality text could revolutionize the way users interact with their iPhones. Siri would be both talk and action, capable of carrying on nuanced conversations, composing emails, or even writing creative content.
Details are still scant, but with a major player like Apple entering the fray, the future of AI-powered smartphones looks brighter than ever.
