The Unicode Consortium, the gatekeeper of everyone’s beloved emojis, is about to make it easier to digitally express your fatigue. While the list isn’t yet set in stone, it’s likely that a set of emojis will soon grace iPhones and iPads to add nuance to chats.
The MVP of this proposed lineup would have to be the highly relatable ‘Face with Bags Under Eyes’. Why that might be so is self-explanatory.
Unicode presented a preview of the Emoji 16 standard. The release is expected at the end of the year, so far only 7 new emoji have been added.

All of them will appear in iOS 18, redrawn in Apple style.

Finally, an icon that captures the collective exhaustion felt after a long day of Zoom meetings, existential pondering, and existential pondering during Zoom meetings. It’s the visual equivalent of that third cup of coffee you desperately need but probably shouldn’t have, what with that lack of sleep.
While the jaded expression steals the spotlight, there’s a motley crew of other contenders vying for a spot in our digital lexicon, including the ‘Fingerprint’, ‘Leafless Tree’, ‘Root Vegetable’, ‘Harp’, ‘Shovel’, and ‘Splatter’ emoticons.
Notably, the images pictured above aren’t Apple’s official designs. Unicode provides the raw ingredients to vendors like Apple, Google, and Samsung, and it’s up to the tech giants to interpret them using their individual design languages.
As pointed out by 9to5Mac, the new emojis probably won’t appear in the initial release of iOS 18. Rather, Apple typically saves these for subsequent updates, like iOS 18.2, 18.3, or 18.4.
In the meantime, you can raise a virtual coffee mug to the tentative ‘face with bags under eyes’. Because whether you’re burning the midnight oil or just binge-watching cat videos, we’ve all been there. And now, soon, we’ll have the perfect emoji to reflect it.
