Sam Butcher, the creator of the widely recognizable Precious Moments figurines, passed away on May 20, 2024, at the age of 85. The company, Precious Moments Inc, announced his passing in a social media post, stating he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones at his home in Carthage, Missouri. No cause of death was disclosed.
The company also highlighted his life’s mission: “to share God’s gift of love with the world."
Butcher's artistic journey began in his youth, where he spent countless hours drawing and writing. This passion led him to pursue a scholarship at the College of Arts and Crafts in Berkeley, California. However, it was his creation of the wide-eyed, teardrop-shaped children figurines in the 1970s that catapulted him to international fame.
Precious Moments figurines, often featuring Christian themes and messages of love, became a cultural phenomenon. The porcelain collectibles resonated with millions, finding their way onto shelves and into hearts around the world.
Butcher’s creative influence extended beyond figurines. He also designed and founded the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Missouri. This pastel-painted, non-denominational oasis features paintings and sculptures in his signature style. The centerpiece is the chapel itself, inspired by Butcher’s 1983 visit to the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Spanning over 5,000 square feet, the chapel walls showcase a breathtaking collection of 84 Biblical murals.
There’s no denying the impact Butcher's creations have had. Precious Moments Inc. continues to operate under the leadership of Butcher’s children, and the company remains a significant force in the giftware industry.
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Precious Moments beloved founder, Sam Butcher,...
