Meta has decided to replace the controversial ‘Made with AI’ tag, which bizarrely marked original photos and artworks as synthetically created, with a less vague alternative. The label will now be updated to read ‘AI Info’ across its apps, including Instagram and Facebook.
Rolled out in April, the ‘Made with AI’ tag was intended to help users identify AI-generated content and make sense of a growingly digitally-cluttered world. However, it was met with widespread criticism as it also mislabeled images with minimal AI involvement, such as those edited using retouching tools in Adobe Photoshop.
The indiscriminate application of the label, plus Instagram’s lack of providing context, had photographers and content creators feeling unfairly penalized. Many threatened to boycott the platform and switch to new anti-AI rival Cara, which gained hundreds of thousands of new users following the introduction of the feature.
Meta’s revised approach seeks to strike a balance, aiming to provide users with more context. Clicking on the label will now lead to additional details about the AI involvement in a given post.

“We want people to know when they see posts that have been made with AI,” the company reasons in an updated blog post. “Like others across the industry, we’ve found that our labels based on these indicators weren’t always aligned with people’s expectations and didn’t always provide enough context.”
Acknowledging that “some content that included minor modifications using AI, such as retouching tools,” weren’t spared from the tag, “we’re updating the ‘Made with AI’ label to ‘AI info’ across our apps, which people can click for more information.”

Meta says it is working with others across the industry to refine its process.
