In a surprising twist at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, delegates and attendees have adopted an unusual accessory: fake ear bandages. This trend began after former President Donald Trump appeared at the convention with a bandage over his right ear, following an assassination attempt where a bullet grazed him.
Arizona delegate Joe Neglia sparked the fad, initially donning a piece of paper over his ear on his way to the convention to symbolize his support for Trump. Neglia, an electrical engineer and community college teacher, didn’t expect his gesture to catch on, but it quickly did. By the time he arrived, many convention-goers had followed suit, using everything from medical gauze to American flag adhesive bandages to create their own versions.
A departure from the typical MAGA hats, this quirky show of solidarity turns a moment of solidarity into a statement of unity and resilience, with delegates at the convention using the bandages to express their support for Trump in a visual and symbolic way. As one delegate humorously remarked, “The ear hurts like hell, but will feel better in November.”
