Johnny Depp Debuts Tarot Artworks Inspired By His Life

Hollywood swashbuckler Johnny Depp has traded his sword for a paintbrush, unveiling his latest art collection—Tarot. This limited-edition series, available exclusively from Castle Fine Art, delves into the captivating world of tarot imagery, offering a glimpse into Depp’s subconscious and the wellspring of his artistic inspiration.

Following the success of his previous collections, including the sell-out Friends & Heroes series, Depp embarks on a new artistic direction. Tarot"draws on the age-old symbolism of tarot cards, a subject that has long fascinated the actor. Depp reimagines the major arcana—The Lovers, The Empress, The Emperor, and Strength—weaving personal narratives and symbolic flourishes into each piece.

The collection is a visual snapshot of Depp’s life experiences. The Lovers, for instance, evokes themes of partnership and protection, while The Emperor—inspired by a role Depp played—represents the facades of power and the search for authenticity. A heartfelt tribute emerges in The Empress, dedicated to Vanessa Paradis, the mother of Depp’s children. The imagery reflects her strength and unwavering presence in his life.

Strength completes the quartet, drawing inspiration from a painting Depp created on the cusp of fatherhood. The majestic elephant replaces the traditional lion, symbolizing gentle power and unwavering protection. An inscription on the artwork ponders the futility of conflict, hinting at the artist’s own philosophical musings.

Depp invites viewers to embark on their own interpretative journey. Each piece can stand alone or be viewed as part of a larger narrative, reflecting the artist’s life and the characters he’s brought to life on screen. 

The mystical collection goes on sale Thursday, July 18, 2pm BST (9am ET) from Castle Fine Art nationwide UK galleries, partner gallery Castle Contemporary 413 West Broadway, Soho, New York and worldwide.
