Honda is dusting off its first-ever concept car from 1984, the HP-X, and bringing it to Monterey Car Week next month. The HP-X Concept, originally showcased at the 1984 Turin Auto Show, now makes its North American debut at the 73rd Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Designed by the renowned Italian design firm Pininfarina, the HP-X sports a striking wedge profile and a cockpit inspired by fighter jets. Its aerodynamics incorporate “ground effects,” and innovative cooling solutions boost the performance of its mid-mounted two-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, derived from a Honda F2 racing engine.

The futuristic design includes a jet-fighter-style removable single-piece Perspex canopy instead of traditional doors and utilizes alternative materials like honeycomb panels, carbon fiber, and Kevlar to reduce weight and enhance performance. Inside, the HP-X features advanced technologies such as real-time telemetry, GPS, and road condition warnings via “special sonar,” all of which are now commonplace in modern vehicles.

The Pebble Beach Concours appearance marks another significant milestone: the HP-X becomes the first Japanese vehicle entry at the prestigious event in over 50 years.
