Blooming with creativity, Japanese artist Raku Inoue has got pop-culture characters turning over a new leaf.
Based in Montreal, Inoue has carved out a unique niche for himself by transforming ordinary plant materials into extraordinary works of art. His arrangements of leaves, petals, and stems bring to life a menagerie of creatures, both real and fantastical. Now, Inoue—who loves “watering my Creativitree”—is branching out into the realm of pop culture, reimagining film and video game favorites through his botanical lens.
Inoue’s floral interpretations feature characters from well-known franchises such as Super Mario Bros, Studio Ghibli films (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Castle in the Sky), and Pokémon. Each piece is a carefully constructed collage of natural elements.

Take, for instance, his whimsical portrait of Bowser, the notorious villain from Super Mario Bros. Inoue skillfully employs a palette of tiger lily, beige orchid, yellow lily, and white peony petals to capture the essence of this formidable character. The result is a striking portrait that manages to be both fierce and delicate.

Mario himself receives similar treatment, with Inoue selecting a vibrant array of flowers to recreate the plumber’s signature look. Red emperor tulips and pink lilies form Mario’s distinctive cap, face, and shirt, while shrubby cinquefoils, white peonies, and blue clematises complete his outfit.
