The new A Minecraft Movie doesn’t seem to be a chip off the old block. On Monday, Warner Bros Pictures unveiled the first glimpse of the upcoming adaptation of the best-selling video game of all time, starring Jack Black as the protagonist, Steve, and Jason Momoa as The Garbage Man. Alas, this reveal has sparked a virtual riot among the game’s devoted community.
The trailer’s blend of live-action performances and CGI environments has struck a sour note with viewers, who argue it strays too far from the game’s beloved blocky aesthetic. Many have drawn unfavorable comparisons to the initial Sonic the Hedgehog movie reveal, which faced similar pushback over its character design.
On Reddit, a post titled “Minecraft movie looks garbage” quickly amassed nearly 30,000 upvotes. One disgruntled fan lamented, “I waited 10 years for this crap?” The sentiment has echoed across other platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), with players pleading for a fully animated approach akin to The LEGO Movie.
One viewer on X didn’t mince words, declaring, “This may be the worst movie trailer I’ve ever seen.” Another quipped, “Did an AI make this movie?” The frustration is palpable, with many feeling that the live-action approach creates an unsettling uncanny valley effect, stripping away the charm that made Minecraft a global phenomenon.
The criticism hasn’t been without humor, though. One clever commenter suggested, “You can still CGI Jack Black into Jock Block.”
Despite the appalling response, Warner Bros hasn’t announced any plans to modify the film before its scheduled premiere on April 4, 2025… yet. The producers seem to have a mountain to climb to win over their core audience.
