Prada’s latest fashion statement is truly out of this world. The Italian luxury brand has teamed up with space infrastructure company Axiom Space to design a next-generation spacesuit for NASA’s Artemis III mission. Unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, the new Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) weaves Prada’s expertise on sewing, craftsmanship, and fabrics into Axiom’s technical knowledge.
The AxEMU suit sports a primarily white exterior, designed to reflect sunlight and heat, crucial for protecting astronauts from the harsh lunar environment. But it’s not all function over form—the suit features eye-catching gray patches on the elbows and knees, along with red stripes that nod to Prada’s Linea Rossa collection. Make no mistake; these design elements serve practical purposes too, such as helping to identify the mission commander.

The suit is created with enhanced mobility in mind. Unlike the bulky spacesuits of the Apollo era, the AxEMU allows for greater flexibility, enabling wearers to perform complex tasks during moonwalks with ease. The suit also incorporates advanced health monitoring systems and biometric sensors, along with a portable life support system capable of sustaining astronauts for up to eight hours.
The AxEMU can accommodate a wide range of body types, from the first to 99th percentile in anthropomorphic sizing, for both male and female crew members. It’s built to withstand extreme temperatures at the lunar south pole and can endure the coldest temperatures in permanently shadowed regions for at least two hours.

It’s not uncommon to find aesthetic interstellar motifs in clothing. This time, however, the stakes are astronomically high. The collaboration sees a new frontier for the fashion and aerospace sectors. The AxEMU suit is expected to be used beyond the Artemis III mission, potentially being utilized for future International Space Station missions and other low-Earth orbit activities.
"Going beyond our limits is one of the company’s values that perfectly reflects the spirit of the Prada brand and my parents’ vision. I’m very proud of the result we’re showing today, which is just the first step in a long-term collaboration with Axiom Space,” expresses Lorenzo Bertelli, chief marketing officer and head of corporate social responsibility of the Prada Group. “We’ve shared our expertise on high-performance materials, features, and sewing techniques, and we learned a lot. I’m sure we’ll continue to explore new challenges, broaden our horizons, and build new scenarios together.”

The AxEMU suit will soon undergo rigorous testing to ensure it can handle the extreme conditions of the lunar surface. With the Artemis III mission set for 2026, NASA aims to return humans to the moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972.
