Google has lifted the curtain on SynthID, making its text watermarking technology available to developers worldwide through an open-source release.
Developed by Google DeepMind, the technology embeds subtle watermarks into the text created by artificial intelligence systems. These markers are designed to survive edits, such as cropping or paraphrasing, making it easier for developers and businesses to verify the origin of digital content. Now available through Google’s Responsible Generative AI Toolkit and the AI platform Hugging Face, SynthID is part of Google’s broader push toward responsible use of generative AI.
SynthID works by modifying the probability scores of tokens—essentially the building blocks of generated text—during the creation process. These changes create a pattern detectable by software but invisible to human readers, helping developers mark their AI-generated content without impacting readability. Google DeepMind’s vice president of research, Pushmeet Kohli, explained that the tool ensures the quality and accuracy of text remain intact, offering transparency without slowing down AI models.

The need for reliable AI detection tools has become more pressing as large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to generate misleading information or unauthorized content. While SynthID isn’t a silver bullet for detecting all AI-generated text, it’s a meaningful step in managing the risks associated with generative AI.
Google has integrated SynthID into its Gemini models, and the tool is now available for developers to explore.
With that said, SynthID isn’t a silver bullet for detecting all AI-generated text. The watermarking struggles with brief passages, heavily reworded content, and factual questions that leave little room for creative output. Additionally, the tool’s effectiveness diminishes when AI-crafted content is translated or rewritten extensively.
As the technology evolves, Google hopes tools like this will help users make better-informed decisions about the origins of the content they encounter online.
