OpenAI is disrupting the search engine space that Google has dominated for a little over 25 years. In its latest update to ChatGPT, users can now search information from the web directly within the chatbot and receive detailed, timely answers about the latest news, weather, sports updates, and more—complete with relevant links—without leaving the conversation.
The web search capability is built right into the ChatGPT platform, and it works in two main ways: users can either prompt the AI to search by clicking on the web icon or let the chatbot decide when a search would help answer their question.
The feature, previously trialed under the name ‘SearchGPT’, leverages an advanced version of GPT-4, pulling real-time information from multiple news and data sources to provide the most current answers. The tool moves ChatGPT into direct competition with Google and Bing. Not only can it talk back in natural language, but it also provides deeper context and engagement than typical search results.

Information is presented along with linked sources. The idea is to keep things smooth, convenient, and conversational while presenting valuable and reliable insights.

Up against tools like Microsoft Copilot and Google’s Gemini, OpenAI has had to arm itself with more powerful search capabilities that make it more useful than the pack. This shift elevates ChatGPT’s role as an ever-versatile assistant, handling everything from answering casual questions to assisting with document creation and even enabling voice interactions.

With this rollout, initially available for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, OpenAI is also making the platform more visually dynamic. Users can now expect not just responses in text but also interactive displays of data, like stock charts and news summaries, all incorporated seamlessly into their chat.
