Duolingo’s menacing owl mascot is singing to his own tune this Christmas season with Owl on the Prowl, the language learning app’s first holiday album.
The four-track masterpiece, available on Spotify, embraces the platform’s infamous reputation for sending aggressive notifications and guilt-tripping users. This festive season, it’s judging learners as naughty or nice based on how regularly they take their lessons.
But do you get a lump of coal for skipping your Portuguese lessons? Nope! Your parents immediately get kidnapped!
Take it from this poor little boy in the music video for the album’s standout track, Bring My Parents Back. This ominous twist to the beloved Christmas movie, Home Alone, tells the story of Timmy, whose parents were taken away “by an owl with a BBL [Brazilian butt lift]” after he failed to keep up with his language lessons. The song was written by The Gregory Brothers, known for their viral internet content.
The collection also includes titles like Owl on The Prowl (Duo’s Always Watching You), I Hate Christmas, and Japanese or Broken Knees.
Holiday merch sees the Duo plushie sport a tiny Santa hat, with Duolingo aspiring to make ‘Owl on the Prowl’ the new ‘Elf on the Shelf’ tradition. For best effect, place it anywhere in the home to reinforce the idea that the green bird with a booty is always watching—even during the holiday season—to make sure no one in the family forgets their language practice.
