Netflix is spicing up date nights indoors with your Valentine with an unconventional suggestion: couples should consider “opening the relationship.”
…At least when it comes to their watchlists. Instead of sticking to shared viewing habits, the streaming platform is encouraging partners to explore their own entertainment preferences and see other profiles, while still enjoying the experience together.
Netflix has been in the middle of a modern bonding ritual for years. But as much as it can be fun for your relationship, it’s near impossible for any couple to have identical tastes. Maturing means realizing that enjoying different content separately doesn’t mean drifting apart—it can actually strengthen the relationship.
In an eye-opening campaign crafted by Buenos Aires creative agency Isla, Netflix flirts with the idea of creating separate profiles for each partner to explore viewing choices. As it seems, expanding entertainment options can expand perspectives, giving significant others new topics to discuss and fresh stories to share.
“We know that it takes courage to make a decision like this, but it’s good to be encouraged to try other things,” shares Matias Eusebi, executive creative director at Isla Agency, in a statement shared with DesignTAXI. He suggests that branching out could introduce new conversations and experiences into relationships. While some may be hesitant, he argues that it could ultimately benefit both partners.
“Opening the couple can open the doors to new stories and adventures. Is it risky? Maybe. But if it works, it can do the relationship a lot of good,” Eusebi, reiterates.
The lighthearted approach taps into the reality of modern relationships, where personal interests and shared experiences can coexist. No need to fight over the remote; there’s plenty of content for everyone.
