New York Public Library Shares Its Top 125 Books For Readers & Non-Readers Alike

In celebrating 125 years, the New York Public Library (NYPL) has treated readers to some of its most compelling book titles. Following a curation of its most checked-out reads since its opening in 1895, the library has unleashed a list of 125 book titles it loves.
To put together the recommendations, which are also available to print and download for your next trip to the library, the NYPL’s librarians ran through a number of criteria for the selection. All of the books were published after 23 May 1895, the day that resources at the Astor and Lenox libraries were fully ported over to the NYPL, and have to primarily “inspire a love of reading” and “make people want to keep reading.”
The titles are also inclusive to race, gender, sexual orientation and literary genre. With the exception of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone—which “transcends age categories”—the suggested books are for adults.
If you haven’t picked up a book in a while, you can rest easy, as the librarians also considered titles “non-readers may love.” They also “survive the test of time,” and are great for sharing with generations to come.
