On Monday, NBCUniversal announced that it will be rolling out new theatrical releases digitally via on-demand rentals amid the novel coronavirus spread.
The studio will be offering up some of its latest films, including The Hunt and The Invisible Man, for on-demand rental lasting for 48 hours at a suggested price of US$19.99.
The forthcomingTrolls World Tour is still set for a box office debut on 10 April 2020, but will also be made available on-demand shortly after.
“Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenging distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable,” NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell revealed in a statement.
The virus has driven box offices in New York City and Los Angeles to shutter due to diminishing crowds. Out of the three films, The Hunt reportedly took a hit as it was projected to earn around US$10 million, but only made slightly over US$5 million for its box office sales.
NBCUniversal has also postponed highly-anticipated films including Disney’s Mulan, which was initially set for release in March, as well as the debut of MGM’s No Time to Die, which has been shifted from April to November 2020.
