‘Mulan’ Directors Reveal The Reason Why Mushu Was Removed From Live Action Film

Fans of Disney’s 1998 film, Mulan revered the beloved dragon, Mushu, voiced by Eddie Murphy. However, Mushu will not be a part of the 2020 live-action remake of the film and the director, Niki Caro, divulged the reasons why.
Caro told Hollywood Reporter that she had traveled to China several times to learn more about the legend of Hua Mulan. During her trips, she spoke to historians about the original story of Mulan, which was derived from the Chinese poem, The Ballad of Mulan, composed in the fifth or sixth century.
The director realized the importance of Mulan in Mainland Chinese culture and understood the impact of the story among the Chinese. She ultimately decided that the live-action film should be more realistic and be respectful to Chinese culture.
USC Professor Stanley Rosen, an expert in Chinese politics and society suggests that “Mushu was very popular in the US, but the Chinese hated it” because the little dragon character had “trivialized their culture,” per Hollywood Reporter.
Along with Mushu, General Li Shang will also be removed from the film, which is set to be released on 27 March 2020.
