‘QuarantineChat’ App Connects Self-Isolated People While Keeping Them Apart

With the novel coronavirus outbreak at large, many are self-isolating to prevent the spread of the virus. However, staying at home for a long period, especially when alone, can permeate a sense of dread. To overcome these feelings, two artists have created an app to allow self-isolated individuals to connect via phone calls.
Artists Danielle Baskin and Max Hawkins have developed the app, QuarantineChat, to pair those stuck at home and let them stay social despite being alone.
First, you’ll need to download the Dialup app and select QuarantineChat, where you will be matched with someone to speak with.
As many people are finding ways to stay entertained and productive while being confined in their homes, it’s important for people to also keep in touch with others for a sense of community amid the uncertain time.

I was dropped into a call—on speaker phone with a family making dinner and rationing their pasta sauce.
Then I connected to someone jogging in place inside their home in Madrid.
Then I talked to someone in Oman who was home with her mom.

Every night at 8pm, people all over Madrid open their windows and clap to thank hospital workers for their hard work. The whole city cheers at once.
