Sports Illustrated’s First Burkini Model, Halima Aden, Returns For Latest Shoot

Halima Aden made history when she became the first-ever model to wear a hijab and burkini in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit issue last year.

The 22-year-old now returns for the 2020 issue, posing in a series of modest beach looks. Lensed by Kate Powers, the model was photographed in various suits, including a pink Tommy Hilfiger catsuit with a camouflage-printed hijab, Myra Swim’s two-piece swimsuit, and a Nike burkini with a matching headscarf.

Sports Illustrated’s latest Swimsuit issue will feature the Somali-American model, along with 56-year-old model Kathy Jacobs, as well as the magazine’s first transgender model Valentina Sampaio.

That can be a young girl from small-town Wisconsin who looks nothing like me but sees that small-town girls can go on and do big things. Or a Christian mom who thanks me for making modest wear look cool, or a woman with skin cancer who thanks me for making her aware that a swimsuit exists that can fully protect her on the beach, or young Muslim and hijab-wearing girls who have never before seen someone who looks like them represented in the entertainment space, I have to push and keep going because I don’t want to let these people down.
