Fans of La Casa de Papel (
Money Heist) will not have to mourn “Bella ciao” for long after part five, when the highly popular Netflix crime drama is scheduled to end.
This is because the Spanish-language show will be rebooted for another round as a Korean drama series by Netflix and South Korea-based BH Entertainment and Contents Zium,
Variety reports.
The 12-part series will be spearheaded by acclaimed director Kim Hong-sun and screenwriter Ryu Yong-jae. It’s still too early to find out when filming will kick off or who will lead the South Korean version.
Regardless, Money Heist creator Alex Pina is excited about how his series will be interpreted through new eyes. “Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people,” he expressed in a statement via
Variety.
He also thought it was “fascinating” how the Spanish-language series has caught enough interest among South Korean executives for them to want to produce a reboot. “The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about,” Pina added.
It’s unusual for Netflix to recreate its own programs, considering its
notoriety in canceling shows only after the first season. However, the success of
Money Heist—which even inspired
a documentary—makes a second shot too tempting to pass up. Netflix
projected back in April 2020 that the series had attracted 65 million households to use the streaming service at the same time.
