London’s River Thames has served as the backdrop for some reality-defying objects of late, including a giant, floating Burberry bag. Now, it’s a host to Virgin Atlantic’s whimsical new ice cream truck, which keeps faithful to the airline by levitating.
For one day on July 14, Virgin Atlantic’s rewards club Virgin Red will give out free ice cream via a “floating” truck that looks to be suspended by a bunch of helium balloons, à la the house in Up. To get up close for a cone, you’d have to earn it by climbing up a 15-foot ladder.
Worry not about the vehicle suddenly losing its ability to fly and hurting passersby, though. As Time Out London notes, the truck is merely a visual illusion. And photos shared online suggest that the prop is actually held up by the ladder.
In place of the familiar bell, the van will play Nena’s apt 99 Luftballons all day. The stunt is in line with Virgin Red’s new Whatever blows your bubble advertisement by brand consultancy Glow London and advertising agency Truant London, which imagines a woman chewing gum and blowing a bubble so massive, it helps her fly.
To keep on brand, patrons can ask for their ice cream to be decorated with a selection of red toppings, including sprinkles, chili flakes, and ketchup. Other freebies, specifically 99 of them, are up for grabs, including Virgin Points that can be exchanged for flights and wine deliveries.
The truck will hover at Observation Point from 11am to 5pm, before disappearing like magic.
