Cyprus’ Underwater Museum Opens, Taking Guests To Submerged ‘Alternate Universe’

We’ve seen quite a bit of news recently of sunken cities discovered and old ruins unearthing archaeological mysteries, but now, this experience could be slightly more attainable without needing to become a fully-fledged archaeologist yourself. All you’ll need is a gulp of air and some flippers on your feet.
Newly opened museum MUSAN is inviting its visitors to dive into a world of underwater treasures, exploring a trove of statues and an “alternative underwater universe,” where the focus is marine life. Organic structures over eight meters (26.2 feet) tall will encourage a wealth of fish, as well as provide shelter for the sculpture installation intertwined within the exhibits.
This makes up an “underwater forest,” otherwise referred to by MUSAN as “reef reforestation.” With this design, it hopes to enhance the new implementation of the area’s Marine Protected Zone and acknowledges the effects of past deforestation.

In the unique museum, its sculptures “consider a magical, mystical, otherworldly style,” writes MUSAN. They aim to combine the traditional formation with modern design, while acknowledging the city’s rich heritage and history. The 93 art pieces were created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, according to Greek Reporter.
“The creative objective is to create a seamless link between the land and the ocean,” the museum explains. “Combining two disparate wonders, one created by man and one designed by nature.”
Visitors can access the museum via snorkel, which requires no experience or certification, or scuba-diving, which does require an open-water certification or equivalent for safety. MUSAN is located on the Pernera beach in Ayia Napa, and reservations are required.
