Nikon School’s ‘Live Remote Shooting’ Course Lets You Snap Outdoors… From Home

For many, outdoor photoshoots have become almost a thing of the past. It can also be agreed that the best classes are conducted outside, though this is no longer a reality for some.
As a breath of fresh air, Nikon’s educational wing Nikon School is remixing the usual virtual class formats with a taste—or view—of nature. Its upcoming ‘Live Remote Shooting’ course is akin to a real-world photography field trip, except that a professional trainer will be the only one on-site while students will be tucked into the safety of their own homes—no flight ticket required at all.
The workshop is more hands-on than a lecture, since students can “follow” the trainer around hard-to-reach locations and conduct shoots through camera equipment virtually supplied by Nikon. This works via a livestream, with the camera tethered to a shared screen so pupils can control it from home, directing the instructor on where to take the photos.
“You’re in control; you’re shooting,” says a trainer in the promotional video.

According to Digital Camera World, virtual cameras will feature the same button functionality as if students were to work a camera physically. Participants can fully toggle camera settings, and even request for specific lenses or gadgets.
When an image is shot, it will immediately appear on the screen. RAW photos will then be sent to the student to be post-processed by them.
Neil Freeman, Nikon School UK training manager, describes that the format would provide “all photographers with accessibility to remote locations and the unique opportunity to see and shoot as we do in picturesque sites around the UK and beyond.” The course will commence in October 2021.
