Old Phones Just Taking Up Space? App Turns Them Into Security Cams, For Free

If you have five-year-old smartphones lying around and don’t know what to do with them, it’s time to take these old fogeys out of retirement and put them to work. In the spirit of recycling, your forgotten iPhones and Android devices still have a purpose—they can watch your home for you when you’re back in the office and finally joining in-person meetings.

Fast Company’s Doug Aamoth recommends installing AlfredCamera Home Security, a free app that converts Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones or tablets into  wireless security cameras “in minutes.” This means there’s no need to purchase a separate home camera.

You’ll simply have to connect the older phone, which will serve as the camera; and your regular device, where you’ll view the footage; to a single account. Permissions will be required to set up the camera, but that’s about it. Setup takes just three minutes, according to the app.

AlfredCamera includes motion detection, low-light support, and a two-way talk feature, turning old iOS or Android gadgets into working baby or pet monitors. There is also the option to watch the stream on your computer, via the app’s website.

The free version should work excellently for most users, though there’s also a subscription option (US$6 per month, US$30 per year) that promises better video quality, longer recording periods, and no advertisements. Find out more here.
