PANTONE Debuts Free NFTs Inspired By 2022’s Color Of The Year

PANTONE’s ‘Very Peri’ is its first color to officially saturate the metaverse, and rightfully so, as the futuristic hue is a reflection of the merging of physical and digital landscapes. After announcing its foray into the world of non-fungible tokens last December, the color authority is finally ready to share them with collectors.
The news is better than what cryptocurrency holders could have hoped for: PANTONE’s nine-piece debut NFT collection will be released for free.
In contrast with the mushrooming of NFT projects that seek to monopolize color, the PANTONE NFTs are being distributed to all in hopes “to make art and new forms of art and color accessible” to the masses, a spokesperson for the company tells DesignTAXI.

Designed by Paris-based multidisciplinary artist Polygon1993, each digital collectible is imbued in the 2022 Color of the Year, driving home its role as a symbol for the future.
“When I first saw PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri, it immediately took me back to my childhood. The blue and red undertones gave the color a retro vibe that inspired me to incorporate nostalgic effects that transport people to the past,” says the artist. “With digital tools, I was able to create something new that stems from the old but makes it new and futuristic. It showed me we don’t have to erase everything we learned as kids—instead, we can transform it and give it a new purpose.”

Five NFTs will be given away through the Tezos blockchain, reputed for its energy efficiency and low minting costs. A first rollout of two free artworks will take place on March 9 at 12 pm ET (9 am PT), and three other free designs will launch on March 10 at 7 am ET (4 am ET), via Tezos’ largest NFT marketplace Objkt.

Collectors will simply need a Tezos digital wallet to qualify for the free NFTs. First-timers are welcome too and can set up their digital wallet on Kukai with an existing Google, Twitter, or Reddit account.
The remaining four NFTs will also be complementary, but they’ll be offered exclusively at PANTONE and Tezos’ immersive Very Peri room at SXSW 2022 from March 11 through 14 on a first-come, first-serve basis.
