Unmanned Shipping Container Minimarts Move Into Out-Of-Reach Parts Of France

Grocery stores and bodegas might be things citydwellers take for granted, but in small towns and villages—where footfall is too low for chains to even consider them—they’re pretty much a novelty.
A new wave of minimarts could finally bring basic groceries and essentials closer to more rural areas. They’re cheap, easy to install, and compact at just 15 sqm (161 sqft) too, so expansion is always possible.
As reported by TrendWatching, a startup called Boxy is setting up shipping-container minimarts across France. Because they run quite similar to Amazon’s cashier-free ‘Just Walk Out’ stores, the outlets can operate 24/7 without labor costs.
By downloading the accompanying app, customers will be assigned a unique QR code that lets the store know when the shopper has stepped foot into the store or has checked out. Cameras and weight sensors on shelves inform Boxy when an item has been taken. A receipt is sent to the customer at the end of the experience.

The startup’s founders David Gabai and Tom Hayat believe the modular Boxy marts fill the gap between supermarkets, specialty stores, and delivery services. “With every other shopping experience, there is compromise,” they point out in a statement via Tech.eu. “Large supermarkets are cheap but often far… smaller convenience stores are close by but expensive. Delivery services are convenient, but there’s a waiting time, a fee, and they’re not available everywhere. Very few are open 24/7.”

The automated shops, constructed from recycled sea containers, are able to “deliver uncompromising convenience through every experience,” they elaborate. As the startup doesn’t have to worry about real-estate costs or wages, it is able to price products just as affordably as a grocery chain.

The unmanned minimarts are stocked with a curation of 250 everyday products, which are topped up daily via central distribution channels.
Having recently closed a €25 million (US$27 million) funding round, Boxy has set its sights on opening 1,000 locations—up from just 22 today—by 2025, offering 24/7, all-year convenience to locals in less-accessible zones.
