Bjarke Ingels Group Designs Neuroscience Center To Resemble The Cerebral Cortex

The Bjarke Ingels Group, which recently unveiled a chirpy birdhouse getaway, has now revealed its design for a brand-new neuroscience center in Denmark, Neuro.

According to New Atlas, the forthcoming venture will merge psychiatry and neuroscience research into a single building, which intriguingly, will feature a layout similar to the folds of the cerebral cortex. 

“[The] design proposal for Aarhus University Hospital mimics the gyrification of the human brain to utilize the limited site area most efficiently while creating synergies between the different disciplines within the hospital,” the firm described.

“Natural materials throughout the building such as wood and brick, used in other buildings at the campus will bring positive health benefits and a comforting atmosphere to the patients and guests.” 

In total, the structure will span 215,000 sq ft across six stories, and will be adjoined with the current Aarhus University Hospital campus. 

Not just a mere clinic for patients, visitors to Neuro will get to enjoy a large atrium with interactive pubic exhibits, and a presentation area to display the hospital’s latest research. 

Additionally, as per The Architect’s Newspaper, the site will outdoor terraces on each story for relaxing strolls. Natural ventilation and daylight will be incorporated into its sustainable design as part of the Danish green building standard certification.  

Neuro is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
