Stay In A Hotel Room Surrounded By Birdhouses For A Chirpy Eco Getaway

Solitude doesn’t feel so lonesome in this nature-informed hotel room, where you can call hundreds of winged households your neighbors.

Treehotel, a hotel in Swedish Lapland with unique boutique concepts that draw from their natural surroundings, has unveiled a new spherical room that’s adorned with 350 birdhouses on the outside, inviting bird species to rest in cozy little suites while creating one-of-a-kind views for human guests.

Designed by architects at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) with insights from bird experts, the wholesome ‘Biosphere’ aspires to revive the local bird population, which is dwindling due to a loss of homes in the Swedish woods. As detailed by CNN Travel, the exterior welcomes winged friends of several sizes—including western jackdaws and gray-headed chickadees—as well as accommodates bees and bats.

The inside takes on a simple, organic design that blends into the natural environment; the gaze is instead directed to the glass wall and ceiling windows, through which birdlife can be observed.

The room is located at the top of trees, as the Treehotel name suggests, and guests would need to walk up a suspended footbridge to perch in the lodgings, among their avian neighbors.

Ulf Ohman, an ornithologist involved in the project, imagines the stay to deliver a long-lasting impact. The hope is for guests to one day, too, install bird nests outside their own homes.

To the hotel’s advantage, nature’s design leaves the façade clean. The architecture studio’s founder Bjarke Ingels is comforted by the fact that birds do not poop where they nest, ensuring that the clear windows remain, well, clear.

“After our first conversations with Ulf Ohman from Norrbotten Ornithological Association we were relieved to learn that birds don’t drop where they nest—so there is hope for the glass to remain clear within this cloud of aviary architecture,” Ingels notes in a press statement.

As with Treehotel’s other rooms, Biosphere will run on a circular water system and offer three liters of water for washing hands.

Biosphere is scheduled for a May opening. A night in this eco room for two, which comes with a buffet breakfast, will be priced at 12,000 SEK (US$1,250).
