Twitter To Let Users ‘Unmention’ Themselves From Regrettable Conversations
Just days after Elon Musk was revealed as the site’s majority stakeholder, it seems Twitter is rolling along with much sought-after updates.
Apart from testing an edit button with Twitter Blue subscribers in coming months, the network is allowing users to finally untag themselves from conversations they don’t wish to be a part of.
According to CNET, the concept for removing the “@” was first touted by Twitter privacy designer Dominic Camozzi in June 2021, and has now become a reality.
“We’re experimenting with Unmentioning—a way to help you protect your peace and remove yourself from conversations—available on Web for some of you now,” announced Twitter Safety.
To extricate yourself from any heated conversation, or one that’s just plain boring, simply click on the three dots on the top right of a tweet, followed by “leave this conversation.”
At the moment, there’s no way to undo this function, meaning once you’ve removed yourself, your twitter username will turn gray (instead of being linked back to your account in blue), and you won’t be able to join back in with the same tweet.
As TechCrunch noted, the company hasn’t said how many users will be able to access the trial feature, but said the global test would be “small.” If you’re using the Twitter app on mobile, you won’t get to try it either, as the feature is currently web-only.
Fingers crossed the Unmentioning feature gets a full roll out in the future, so we can choose to be excluded from exhausting narratives or unnecessary online disputes when it all gets too much.
