Free-speech privileges aren’t always free, it seems.
Elon Musk’s plans for Twitter post-acquisition remain to be a giant question mark, but he’s now throwing in the suggestion that the social network could be payable for some users. If you’re on the app just to tweet about an unhinged person you saw on the commute, or simply to spew conspiracy theories, fret not—at present, Musk doesn’t foresee charging personal accounts.
The bad news is for commercial and government users, who would potentially have to pay a fee for using the social network. The silver lining is that it would come at a “slight cost.”
“Ultimately, the downfall of the Freemasons was giving away their stonecutting services for nothing,” Musk shared.
Elsewhere, the Wall Street Journal reports that Musk is considering making Twitter public again within three years of his US$43 billion buyout. Reuters also revealed last week that Musk has brought up charging publishers for embedding tweets.
