Adidas Unveils Headphones That Charge Themselves In Presence Of Light
Is there anything worse than rushing out of the house, only to find that your headphones have not been charged?
Well, Adidas has found a solution for when you’ve forgotten to do that. It has created a pair of headphones that can be charged without being plugged into anything.
That’s because the self-charging device relies on solar power, or any light from any source, to keep it playing tunes through the day.
The RPT-02 SOL’s sides are embedded with a solar panel by Exeger Powerfoyle. This array absorbs natural and artificial light and converts it into energy, so you won’t have to be overreliant on the sun’s presence to keep the headphones juiced up.
You can keep your earspeakers by your bedside or leave them around the house throughout the day to keep them charged, eliminating all need for the RPT-02 SOLs to be plugged in. But if you find yourself needing to charge them by cable in a pinch, then there is always the option to power them up with a USB Type-C cable.
The headphones can last up to 80 hours and have an IPX4 rating, perfect for working out in the rain if you must.
Adidas has also gone down the sustainability route by making them out of 87% recycled plastic and polyester.
The on-ears are a sleek black with a rugged outdoorsy twist to them. The actual headphone portion of the device is wrapped in what looks like knitted fabric. The ear cushions and headband can be taken apart and washed after a sweaty workout.
A dedicated app by the sportswear brand allows users to track the device’s charging levels.
Adidas isn’t the first to introduce self-charging cans; in fact, Urbanista previously released its own light-powered headphones and earbuds.
These light-harnessing headphones will go on sale on August 23 at a retail price of US$229.
