Tumblr Pokes Fun At Twitter By Offering ‘Useless’ Blue Ticks For Bragging Rights

As Twitter descends into chaos over its confusing verification policies, blogging site Tumblr is taking a jab at its social media rival, offering two “Important Blue Internet Checkmarks” to its users for US$7.99. 

Yup, they’re the same price as Twitter’s paid-for blue ticks, although the service has currently been halted while the site attempts to deal with an influx of fake accounts and impersonators. 

“They’re a steal at $7.99—that’s cheaper than some other places, when you consider that you get not one but TWO checkmarks for your blog on web only (for now),” the Tumblr staff writes on the blog. 

“Why, you ask? Why not? Nothing matters!” the team adds, continuing with a tongue-in-cheek assertion that there isn’t much point being an influential figure online “if you can’t prove it with an actual, physical unverified verification symbol.” 

In total, the network is selling three different variations of its blue checkmarks. First, the US$7.99 bundle entitles users to two ticks to adorn their blogs.

There is no limit to the number of checkmarks a blog can purchase, leading to the hilarity of some users having over 10 blue ticks next to their usernames. 

Additionally, one can order checkmark stickers for US$3 or enamel pins for US$6 to have the coveted symbols in person.  

Those who are familiar with the platform will know that it has never seriously offered verification as an option for its users, even when blogs are run by known celebrities or gain enormous popularity. But who can fault it for cashing in on Twitter’s downfall as it tries to lure users over?
