If you’ve been paying attention to the tech sphere in the last few months, you might have stumbled across a new entrance to the smartphone market, ‘The Nothing Phone’—officially known as Phone (1). This mid-range phone made headlines as it sought to set itself apart from a sea of Androids and iPhones that dominated the market.
Its biggest selling point was the chance to own something not many people had, and it also had cool LED lights on its transparent back. However, the UK-based company never quite made it across the pond, sticking to selling its products in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
In a recent interview with CNBC, founder and CEO Carl Pei noted he is now looking to strike it big in North America and Canada.
Pei had toldCNBC that the brand never took a chance in the US because it required a lot of technical legwork to get the phone operable with the many carriers and their different customizations needed to accommodate Androids.
However, Pei claims that Nothing is in the works with carriers in the US to launch the phone.
Interestingly, though, in the report, he never specifically said the Phone (1) was to make the journey to America. Instead, he mentioned a “future product” that could open the door for a new smartphone variation.
In October, Nothing released its Ear (stick) earbuds, which Pei notes have done considerably well in the US market, stating that a third of its sales come from the country. Pei rounded off the interview by stating that he hopes the company will become profitable in 2024, as it is currently still making losses and could one day go up against the likes of Apple.
