It’s no secret that Twitter is going through a rough patch. Whether this moment of uncertainty is just a passing phase or if we’re watching the platform’s downfall is still very much up in the air.
That being said, the uncertainty of its future may open a gap in the microblogging sphere as other companies are vying to take that spot. One, in particular, is Meta. Surprise, surprise.
Meta has had a history of being a chameleon in the tech space and transforming into its rivals. Instagram practically shape-shifting into TikTok with Reels comes to mind, as with the company’s replication of Snapchat with Stories. So it’s no wonder the company is looking to jump onto the space currently occupied by Twitter.
The news comes after an article from the New York Times reported that the company had a meeting discussing its future options.
“Twitter is in crisis, and Meta needs its mojo back,” one Meta employee wrote in a post, according to the Times. “LET’S GO FOR THEIR BREAD AND BUTTER.”
And its bread and butter are precisely what it’s after.
During the meeting, the team reportedly discussed starting something called ‘Instagram Notes’, which could build on the photo-sharing app or even be a new platform with a Twitter-like feed containing short texts and photos. Potentially, the feature could be called ‘Real Reels’, ‘Realtime’, or ‘Instant’.
Meta staff met to discuss building a Twitter rival! ð¯
Ideas included - Rollout of Instagram's new 'Notes' feature - Building a text-focused app using Instagram’s tech - Adding a new Twitter-like feed to Instagram
Names for the features included: Realtime, Real Reels, Instant
The only odd thing about this is that the description for this new app is that it sounds precisely like what Facebook and Instagram are currently offering in their own ways.
Still, there is something about Twitter’s format that sets it apart from the rest, and if Meta can harness this uniqueness, it might get itself out of the rut it’s currently in.
