Instagram Divulges Why Exactly Your Posts Are ‘Shadowbanned’ From Non-Followers

If you’re showcasing your work or running a business on Instagram, the importance of your reach to potential followers cannot be emphasized. Creators have long wondered why certain posts are performing much poorer than others, and now Instagram is giving them answers whenever something does get “shadowbanned.”

While the social network refrains from using the term “shadowban,” its new feature unmistakably addresses users’ confusion about how the algorithm seems to hide their content deliberately at times. By identifying non-recommended content and divulging exactly why the content is being shielded from others, Instagram says users can use the advice to guide future posts.

Owners of business accounts can now check if their posts are eligible to appear on non-followers’ Explore, Reels, and Feed Recommendations under the ‘Account Status’ column in settings.

If a photo or video is shown to be blocked from suggestions, users can find out why to see if they can fix their posts to get out of the “shadowban.”

According to Instagram’s Recommendation Guidelines, posts that are rejected from recommendation considerations include sensitive or “low-quality” content on health or finance; content that users often react negatively to (such as clickbait, engagement bait, or posts that promote contests or giveaways); content that can be regarded as “low-quality publishing” (like unoriginal content re-shared from TikTok); and false or misleading content.

Users who have a history of faking engagement—such as buying ‘likes’ or followers—or have recently violated the site’s community guidelines may find that their posts have also been hidden from potential followers.

Creators who feel their content has been mistakenly blocked can file an appeal “so our review team can take another look as quickly as possible,” explains Instagram in an updated blog post.

“We know that, for many creators, having Instagram recommend your content is a great way to reach new fans and grow your audience,” the Meta-owned social media app acknowledges. “That’s why it’s important to us that creators understand our guidelines and are able to know if something they've posted or have in their profile may be impacting their reach to non-followers.”

Chiming in on Twitter, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri says creators should understand how the algorithm works to utilize Instagram as a long-term tool and stay on top of a “volatile” reach.

✅ Account Status Update ✅

We're expanding Account Status so professional accounts can understand if their content may be eligible to be recommended to non-followers.

Instagram notes it is currently working on visibility on the account level, and will soon let professional accounts see if they’re being hidden from the search feature or suggested accounts.
