Hydrofoil Superyacht Concept Raises Its ‘Wings’ To Float Over Water

Design studio Lazzarini Design is upping the ante on hydrofoil boats by imagining a future where an entire yacht can shoot up and fly over the water.
 
Named ‘Plectrum’, the superyacht measures 243 feet. Its power comes from three motors capable of handling up to 5,000 hp each to reach a top speed of 75 knots.

In addition, two wings—or foils—will lift it out of the water for a smoother ride across the ocean. In terms of energy, Lazzarini envisions employing a hydrogen engine; unfortunately, the technology is not entirely up to scrap yet.
 
Hydrofoils have been around for over a century, but they have always come in the shape of smaller vehicles such as boats, surfboards, and even bicycles. Not yachts.

The Plectrum might be the exception, as from its demo video, we can see that it will be playing home to ample living spaces, a secondary boat, room for a car, a sports deck, a pool, and even a helicopter. All that added weight might make it sound hard to lift out of the water.
 
Lazzarini is thinking of combatting this issue with a mix of lightweight carbon and composite to keep the vessel as light as possible.
 
The Plectrum is still in the conceptual stage of its design, but Lazzarini Design will be open to building one of these high-flying yachts on demand for around US$87 million.
