Are you looking to kill two birds with one stone while commuting? Sweden is making driving an electric vehicle just a tad bit easier by implementing chargers directly into the roads. Yes, into.

The electric road will be able to power up vehicles as they drive over it, allowing for lesser time stuck waiting around charging stations.

Trafikverket, the Swedish transport administration, is leading the project. Currently, there are a few options that the organization is looking to juice up EVs on the go. The first way is to string power lines overhead and have them transmit energy to a conductive pickup that rests beneath the vehicle. Next is to implant electromagnetic coils in an inductive system directly into the asphalt.

Much of this new tech would not only alleviate the trouble of charging cars but also encourage more companies using heavy goods vehicles (HGV) to switch over to battery-operated automotives.

The new highway could be ready as soon as 2025 and will run through the European E20 stretch between Hallsberg and Örebo, which connect Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. In the US, a similar project is underway in Indiana.
