Magnetic Cement Highway That Could Charge Moving EVs To Be Tested

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), in partnership with Purdue University, has signed up to the ASPIRE (Advancing Sustainability through Power Infrastructure for Road Electrification) initiative. Funded by the National Science Foundation, it aims to create new charging technologies for electric vehicles of the future.
INDOT and Purdue are working together with German firm Magment to test if the company’s magnetized cement will be capable of charging moving vehicles at more than 200 kilowatts. According to Autoblog, the special cement is made of magnetic particles with “record-breaking wireless transmission efficiency” of up to 95%.
The first two phases of the trial will see Purdue’s Joint Transportation Research Program test, analyze, and optimize the cement mixture in the lab. Following that, INDOT will build a quarter-mile stretch of highway using the material, for real-world testing on heavy trucks.
If the trial eventually proves to be successful, the department will then build a new highway on one of the state’s public roads.
