Stable Diffusion Rolls Out Free ‘Uncrop’ Tool To Go Beyond An Image’s Canvas
Stability AI, the brains behind the artificial intelligence image generator Stable Diffusion, has just unveiled a new tool called ‘Uncrop’ on ClipDrop, which allows creatives to extend their picture beyond their original boundaries.
Suppose you have found yourself unhappy with a photo’s composition, but you cannot rectify it. In that case, tools like Uncrop, Photoshop’s Generative Fill, or even DALL-E’s Outpaint usually make for nifty solutions that can help rework the image at hand. By analyzing the existing content, Uncrop uses Stable Diffusion XL’s AI algorithms to generate natural extensions, and allow photographers to get a new composition or refit renders to their desired aspect ration.

It easily matches and in some cases outstrips Adobe's Gen Fill in ease of use and being able to do much larger swaths.

All users have to do is drop a picture into the ClipDrop, and watch as it blends the original render with the newly outpainted regions. Its interface offers various options for expanding the canvas, allowing users to simultaneously extend the image, width, height, or both. Photographers have precise control over the final outcome with added controls for opacity and smoothness adjustments.
Uncrop essentially liberates creatives during the editing process and, instead of wasting a perfectly good image, gives one the option to look at it from a new angle. It also opens the door for novice photographers and graphic designers looking for an easy way to fix a picture.

However, it does have some caveats. As the tool analyzes surrounding pixels to fill in the gaps, its accuracy depends on the complexity of the render. In addition, the company is also asking users to use Uncrop ethically and says that it’s “crucial” to disclose when modifications made to an image using the tool have been made.
Uncrop is now available here for free, and there is a paid version with unlimited access for US$7 per month.
